This year we  have a mix of both undergraduates and postgraduates on the committee representing the interests of all the members of the Italian Society, we are going to have guest speakers, a fresher’s reception, a language exchange, food and drink receptions, events hosted by our great sponsors and much, much more!

This Coming Monday, the 3rd of October at the Emmett Theatre, arts block TCD. We shall host our first guest speaker of the year!

‘Non Sono Stato Io’ A talk by Gherardo Colombo 

Gherardo Colombo was one of the Italian leading public prosecutors. In his 33 years long career he handled some of the country’s most important trials. Since his resignation in 2007, Colombo has been engaging in the area of education: his activities include meeting students from primary schools to universities to explain the role everyone has in the promotion of a culture of lawfulness.

Colombo is convinced that justice involves much more than punishment for the infraction of rules. However, a model of justice as a source of equality and rights cannot work if the relationship between citizen and rules is unbalanced. In his talk, Colombo will explore this important issue, with special reference to “Mani Pulite”, a nationwide Italian judicial investigation held in the 1990s which uncovered a system of political corruption expanding outside the world of ‘rulers’ into those of industry and police.

Italian Society Committee

Author and director Lorella Zanardo will talk to us and introduce the screening of Il corpo delle donne (Women’s Bodies), a documentary in which she explores the way women’s bodies are used by the Italian media. The film will be followed by an open Q&A session.

Trinity Senator Ivana Bacik will introduce the event.

Lorella Zanardo is an organisational consultant and lecturer on women’s issues. She is a member of the Advisory Board of W.I.N., an independent global women’s leadership organization. She has held positions in the marketing field for many years, including Marketing Director for Gruppo Mondadori. She has managed community projects in diversity management and organized and chaired innovative courses on themes of change for organizations and individuals. She has been a theatre and cinema actress and a past presenter at the W.I.N. conference. She lives with her two children, practices yoga and is currently writing a book on the developing role of women in society and organizations. Lorella is also the founder and Director of Sportgate, a company specialising in consultancy services and innovative training methods as practiced in the world of sports and through the stories of great Olympic champions. With this documentary, which she wrote and directed, Lorella has taken Italy by a storm and changed the way people think of women as portrayed by the media the world over.

Senator Ivana Bacik, LLB, LLM (Lond), BL, FTCD, is 42 and the Reid Professor of Criminal Law, Criminology and Penology at Trinity College Dublin (a position previously held by Mary Robinson and President Mary McAleese). She is a Senior Lecturer and also a Fellow of Trinity College (elected in 2005), and a practising barrister.

A screening of Inferno V read by Roberto Benigni will take place on Wednesday 16 March at 7pm in the Davis Theatre, Arts Building.

In his journey through Hell, Dante meets the tragic lovers Paolo and Francesca. Francesca had been engaged to the deformed Giancotto Malatesta but fell in love with his younger brother Paolo as they read together the story of Lancelot and Guinevere’s romance. Giancotto surprised them one day and stabbed them both to death and the pair were condemned to exist in a whirlwind in the second circle of hell.

• Between life and death: liminal figures in Emma Dante’s ‘Vita mia’, by Brenda Donohue.

As part of Women’s Week at Trinity, Monday 7th March at 7pm in the Joly Theatre in the Hamilton Building, the Italian Society will show ‘Vogliamo anche le rose’ (2007). Directed by Alina Marazzi, the film follows three women through their life experiences in the Italy of the 1960s and 70s.

The film looks again at recent events from a female point of view, through the first-hand accounts provided by the diaries of three women. Rather than focus on the alleged objectivity of facts, the film gives space to a chorus of voices that narrate those events in first person, visually supported by archival footage of the period, drawn from the most varied sources – institutional, public, militant and private.
Anita, Teresa and Valentina come from different Italian regions and different social backgrounds, but share the same feelings: they no longer feel part of a society based on the patriarchal family, on the power of “husbands” and on the supremacy of males, which requires them to be efficient mothers, obedient wives and virtuous daughters.

Alina Marazzi, born in 1964, lives and works in Milano, Italy.

A documentary film director. Has worked as assistant director for feature films and video art projects. Her critically acclaimed Un’ora sola ti vorrei won best Italian documentary at the 2002 Torino Film Festival, and received special mentions by the jury at the 2002 Locarno Film Festival and at the international It’s All True Festival in São Paulo in 2003.

TCD Women’s Week

Select titles include Feberico Fellini’s Interview, an enchanting work, a logical extension of all the films that have gone before it and an unequivocal cinematic delight. Another eagerly anticipated title is Chaos by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani – a rigorous and eloquent, effortlessly poetic, the film tells us four separate tales of Sicilian life.

The Italian Institute of Culture and TCD will cohost two talks by Marco Santoro, professor of Bibliography and the History of Publishing at University La Sapienza in Rome:

Edizione Tradizionale ed Edizione Digitalizzata: Accenni a Problematiche Metodologiche: 23 February, 2.30pm-4.30pm, The Henry Jones Room, The Old Library, Trinity College. This lecture in Italian, but with written translation into English, will afford a remarkable chance to see a number of rare Italian books from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in the collections of the Library.
