Migration and Recession – Implications of the Economic Crisis for Migrants and Immigration in Europe

The extreme global economic and fiscal crisis which hit the world economy in 2008 has led to a severe recession. This crisis has had a profound impact on immigrants and immigration. Migrants are particularly vulnerable during an economic downturn due to several factors relating to age, education, and by their concentration in temporary jobs and sectors of the economy that are most affected during periods of a recession. Globalization, economic welfare, poverty and social inclusion all influence and are influenced by immigration.

The lectures and the panel discussion will assess the impact of the recession on the economic, social and cultural lives of immigrants and migration policy in Europe, focussing on Germany, Great Britain, Ireland and Spain.

Participants:
Siobhan O’Donohue, Migrants Rights Centre Ireland (Chair)
Prof. Nigel Harris, University College London
Dr. Anna Myunghee Kim, Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA), Bonn
Dr. Steven Loyal, University College Dublin
Dr. Francisco Javier Moreno Fuentes, Institute of Public Goods and Policies (IPP), Madrid

Voting From Abroad Petition

The Italian electoral law is likely to be modified sometime soon in the coming months. The Italian Society would like to remind the Italian legislature that this would be a very good opportunity to change the regulations concerning the vote of Italians who reside abroad. The current law particularly penalizes those Italians who are resident abroad only temporarily. In relation to this matter, a viable alternative system is proposed.
